assemblage journal through morocco
Our adventure through the breathtaking sunset landscapes of Morocco, nestled on the western edge of the legendary El Maghreb, begins in the vibrant city of Casablanca. This bustling metropolis serves as our gateway to a world of rich culture and history, where we will start collecting cherished mementos and creating unforgettable memories together. As we stroll along the scenic Promenade that hugs the Atlantic coastline, we will be captivated by the stunning views and the rhythmic sound of the waves crashing against the shore. A highlight of our time in Casablanca will undoubtedly be a visit to the iconic Hassan II Mosque, a masterpiece of modern architecture that stands majestically against the sky, inviting us to explore its intricate designs and learn about its significance.
From Casablanca, our journey takes us to the enchanting blue city of Chefchaouen, where the buildings are adorned in vibrant shades of blue, creating a dreamy atmosphere. Here, we will wander through winding alleyways, discover local artisan shops, and soak in the serene ambiance of this picturesque town. Our adventure continues as we visit the ancient Roman ruins at Volubilis, where the remnants of an empire come to life, offering us a glimpse into Morocco’s storied past. We will traverse the historic trade route to the village of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site, known for its striking earthen clay architecture and breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, often serving as a backdrop for films and documentaries.
In the High Atlas Mountains, we will immerse ourselves in the traditional art of carpet weaving at the Afous Agous women's collective. Here, we will learn about the intricate processes and cultural significance behind these beautiful creations, gaining a deeper appreciation for the craft. Our adventure will also take us to the vibrant souks of Fez, where the air is filled with the sounds and scents of bustling market life. We will engage with local traders, honing our negotiation skills as we search for unique treasures and souvenirs to take home.
As we arrive at the tranquil Kasbah Aitisfoul, located on the wild edge of the Sahara, we will find ourselves enveloped in the calming rhythm of the desert. Our days will be filled with gentle workshop sessions, allowing us to collaborate with Kirsten on our assemblage journals, capturing our thoughts, experiences, and inspirations as they unfold. We will also participate in the weekly local Souk for our Souk to Tagine Experience, immersing ourselves in the local culture as we shop alongside the residents. After gathering fresh ingredients, we will return to Aitisfoul for an engaging hands-on Tagine cooking class, where we will learn the art of creating this beloved Moroccan dish, blending spices and flavors that are staples of the region. We will off road to the great dunes of Erg Chegaga, for a overnight star filled evening under the stars in our tented camp, complete with a sunset camel ride.
Eventually, our journey will lead us to the vibrant city of Marrakech, a sensory delight where the old meets the new. As we wander through the bustling souks, we will have the opportunity to visit my favorite merchants, each with their own story and unique offerings. From colorful textiles to intricate pottery, the souks will be a treasure trove of Moroccan craftsmanship, leaving us enchanted and inspired by the artistry that surrounds us.
This immersive experience in Morocco promises to be a journey of discovery, connection, and growth, as we embrace the beauty of the land and the warmth of its people.
a note from Kirsten,
This distinctive creative travel experience combines ceramics, book arts, as well as assemblage and layering techniques to manifest a travel tome that reflects our travels through the Land of Sunsets. Using vintage camel saddle bags as our book covers, I will lead participants in building a sculptural assemblage journal including ephemera we have collected along the way. Once at the studio in Aitisfoul, I will guide the class with detailed book making and assemblage techniques, as well as the art of layering and collage with photo transfers, texture and mark making with stitch, fabric rusting and more. In addition, the group will also have the opportunity to experience the Tamegroute ceramic tradition using native clay and Tamegroute glaze to make simple sculptural embellishments for the journal. (No prior ceramic experience is necessary.) My teaching style emphasizes detailed instructions with plenty of individual attention, encouraging students to push the boundaries of the mediums and combine techniques in unique and creative ways. I liken the sculptural journal to a box of surprises that continues to unfold and delight with each turn of the page.

Morocco can be overwhelming for the first time visitor. It is for the traveller who is open to new cultures, and is willing to have plans delayed, or a schedule which may shift. Flexibility is essential and participants should not be fearful travellers; being open to the diversity is all part of the experience and fun.
This is for the person who wants to travel to Morocco with the safety of a group; it is for the adventurer, the person who wants to feel all their senses in this amazing country.
Must have the ability to walk for longer distances on uneven surfaces and keep up with the group. There are often stairs that must be used as elevators are not common in Morocco.
If you have specific allergies (i.e. peanuts, wheat, gluten, dairy, etc.), it will be harder, but not impossible, for you to find food that suits your needs. We are unable to cater to any specific dietary issues - you will need to manage this. All meals will have vegetarian courses.
Consult a doctor, nurse or health care provider, or visit a travel health clinic preferably six weeks before you travel. (side note: If you have any pending health concerns you should contact your health care provider prior to registration).
Should you have any questions prior to registration please email me here.
What People Are Saying . . .
Traveling to India with Michelle Fletcher Atelier was an experience beyond anything I could have imagined. Michelle curated a retreat that was thoughtful, inspiring, and seamless from start to finish. Every detail was intentional - from the incredible places we visited to the rich, hands-on experiences with master artisans. I felt supported, encouraged, and creatively energized every step of the way. Michelle has a gift for bringing together kind, talented women and creating a space where art, adventure, and connection flourish. This retreat was truly life-changing, and I’m so grateful to have been a part of it.
SUMMER KISER
I cannot say enough about the two adventures I've been on with Michelle. Both were also with Kirsten. This is about Michelle (Kirsten is amazing as well). Michelle's curating skills surpass all expectations. Her ability to plan, implement and then be available the entire trip for support, questions and anything else is nothing short of superhuman. There is something magical about the warmth and honesty that Michelle exudes that only enhances these creative and deeply cultural experiences. After each trip I'm left with a longing that I'd wished the trip had not ended. If you have a chance, I'd not pass up an opportunity to travel with Michelle! Add it to your bucket list and make it happen!
